Play Free Poker!

Posted by Curtom | January 1, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, News, Reviews, Tournament |

Yes, you can play free poker! The National League of Poker has a great site that is a great place to play if your new to the game and not quite ready to put your money on the line yet. Just go to http://www.nlop.com/ and create an account. You will be asked to confirm your e-mail address and once completed you may login and begin to play. You will be given a “bankroll” of 2000 points per day to use in any way you like. You may choose cash games, tournaments or sit n go’s.

You earn additional points by referring others to the site as well as winning and “cashing” in tournaments. Prizes are awarded by various sponsors. Some of these prizes include buy-ins to the WSOP, NBA All-Star weekend trips, shirts, watches and I-Pods just to name a few. Cash prizes are awarded up to $500 dollars. There are nightly cash tournaments that pay up to $150.

Once you are logged in the site will attempt to install an active-x certificate. I have had no problems with this whatsoever. No spam or anything that I would consider bad in terms of the performance of my PC’s since installing it. Without the install you will be unable to sit at the tables and play. The only draw back is that you will have to see constant advertisements during your stay. A small price to pay considering there really is some surprisely stiff competition at some of the nightly cash tourneys for obvious reasons.

The National League of Online Poker is a great place for begginers to learn the game and gain valuable experience before depositing on real money sites.

Hey there, I was wondering if you knew why NLOP has dropped to only 2 cash games a day? They have replaced the rest with restaurant gift cards. This is fine to add these to their PRIZES but coupons are not CASH. Also they moved qualifiers into the CASH category they already have a qualifiers category as do they have a separate PRIZE category obviously don’t want anyone to see the meager list of 2 CASH games per day the$100.oo 10:30pm game and the After Hours 1 am game they have duplicated those tourneys in the CASH column. Have you heard any reason for this? Have they become financially insolvent?
I would like to hear your thoughts and anything you have heard.
    Thanks Steve

Thanks for dropping in Steve. I will be more than happy to look into this. I will post as soon as I get a response. You bring up some very valid points. I have not played on NLOP in about a month or so but it has been since they brought Mike Sexton aboard. I was really thinking good things were happening for them at that point. As you indicated in your post. Something has definitely changed. Talk to you soon.

I do not care what anyone says we are lucky to have a site like N.L.O.P. to play on. It has been fun, free and always something new from new game prizes to the ads. You can never make everyone happy, but this site has been good to me from winning to helping me with a problem I might of had.Keep the good work up !!

Thanks for the comment Harrahs. Hopefully this is just a little bump in the road and things will be back to where they were. I will post when I can find out something. Still no response on the e-mail I sent them.

Thanks for stopping by Maggie. That is some great news! I stopped by a few weeks ago and things were definitely not the same. Whatever the problem was at that time it appears that they are making an attempt to fix it as they should. PurePlay is putting a lot of pressure on the free poker sites so they had better pick it up quick if they want to stay in the game.

    Hi, Curtom.
I only have one question , which is based on 40 years of live play.
When this site started one of Mikes sayings was if you have a chip and a chair you can win.
However all that has changed! The NLOP program is designed to remove the low money as fast as possible, its very obvious a child could do the math . The % is about 96% that if low money goes up against top money its game over .If you have ever played a live game then you know this is not so.
Could you please explain this to me and I am not the only one who has noticed this trend.

    Thank you .
    Steven

Hey Steve. Thanks for chiming in.

I did get an opportunity to play on NLOP within the last month or so. I have mixed feelings about it now after that experience. On one hand I think it’s great that they have opened things back up and boosted the prizes and all for the free players. However, I have noticed that they are really pushing for players to sign-up as “premium” account players to take advantage of the opportunities being a premium player affords you.

You are correct in regards to the structure. I am assuming that is what your comment was about. It is indeed a fast structure that does not cater to players that are short stacked. Not many fast structures do. You are also much more likely to get called on a site like this considering there is no “real” money being played with.

So, when playing on sites like NLOP, SPADECLUB, and others like it I have to keep things in context. I really don’t expect the play to be the same as real money poker and I am sure you don’t either.

Just keep in mind that they are selling a product and it can definitely have flaws. Mike Sexton is a paid endorser I am sure so he has to do what he has to do. Sorry for the rant and thanks for the comment.

    Hi again , Curtom.
Thank you for sharing your understanding of the structure of a computer program . My disappointment is not just with NLOP. I’ve played on many sites looking for a fair game, but I’ve yet to find it for free or for pay. I’ve played in a $10,000 live tourament and seen players make some really dumb plays as I’m sure you have. (People get desperate),lol. I’ve read all the guff they write to get you to play, but still find their programs not to be what they say they are.I don’t know if you are allowed to answer this, but do you play at any honest site’s anywhere? If so, I would love to know as my wife and I both play and would be interested if one does actually exist somewhere.
Once again thank you for you reply .
    Steven.

PS Thanks for excusing my bad spelling(lol).
PPS My wife edited this one LOL>…

    Steve,

I can only speak for myself in response to your question about playing on an “honest” online site. Here goes! I have played on three sites throughout my online endeavors. I started on PartyPoker and did exceptionally well there. I was on when poker was just getting off the ground online and I had three Top Three finishes in large MTT’s with over 2500 players. I have also played with moderate success on Full Tilt. However, I have not played very many tournaments on Full Tilt but I do consider it the best site in terms of the skill level of the players.

Lastly, my home at Pokerstars. I have been playing on PStars for three years now and have had a fantastic exerience with exceptional customer support and prompt responses to any questions or issues I may have. I also had a very positive experience with Full Tilt and Party Poker.

Here is where some may disagree but again I am referring to my own experiences. I have not seen an inordinate amount of bad beats or any kind of results in the tourneys and cash games I have played that I would consider out of line. Many players say how can this or that happen when a flop comes down a certain way or the river card hits and saves the same player two hands in a row. Things that, although may appear abnormal, are simply the mathmatics of the game catching up to itself.

I tend to attribute it to variance. For instance: I went through a run earlier this year where I couldn’t get a hand to hold or and I got every possible beat in the book plus some bonus bad beats. That kind of stuff was happening for two months straight. If I had any hair left I would have lost it.

However, I kept my bankroll tight and managed to fight my way through to several small $180 Top Three finishes including 3 first place finishes. I also Final Tabled and qualififed for the Sunday Millions four times in a row in the ten dollar buy-in. All of this happened over a three month period where I could do no wrong. The swings are tough and the variance sucks when it doesn’t go your way but overall I am more than happy at Pokerstars and what I believe to be a well run “honest” online site. I would say the same for Party and Full Tilt.

I hope I answered the question for you guys.
