BB has Ks Kd (two pair, kings and fours).
Outcome: Hero wins t265600.

How do I know it was a poor play? Because I made the same mistake three days prior with AA and lost the tourney in the exact same manner as my opponent did here. In this particular case my opponent had been very aggressive and bluffing at a lot of pots. I figured if I could convince him I was bluffing at the fours he would stick around and it worked perfectly. He still could have gotten away from the hand but he continued being aggressive with his big pair not giving me credit for the trip fours as I am fairly sure he had me on a middle pair or complete bluff.

Poker Business Operator Wins Luxury Jet Service

Posted by Curtom | January 7, 2008 | Posted in: News | Comments (0)

The world of online poker is alive and well, and one lucky poker business owner got to experience that first hand by winning a luxury jet service contract worth $100,000. The promotion was part of an online poker affiliate site promotion, with the top winner getting the prize. A poker affiliate site is one that helps poker rooms bring in the players, so naturally poker sites will want to reward top producers. Roger Shriver was the winner this time around, and his windfall is one example of how the poker industry seems to be thriving despite various local and regional laws.

How Did I Learn to Play Poker?

Posted by Curtom | January 6, 2008 | Posted in: Articles | Comments (0)

I learned to play poker on a complete and utter fluke. I just happened to be coming from the kitchen and on my way upstairs when my wife was watching the World Poker Tour on TV. I immediately turned to her and said, “That’s an old mans game. What are you watching that for?” She told me that I was missing out on something really cool. I never knew my wife to play poker and I knew the WPT was in it’s first season but I had ZERO interest.

To make a long story short I vowed to watch with her the next week just to keep things peaceful. I ended up buying Super System and another book on poker that escapes my thoughts at the moment the very next day. I opened up an account on Party Poker and immediately lost $150 bucks within my first week.

-INSERT LAUGHTER HERE-

Well, I decided to give it one last shot and I figured I should at least bankroll myself properly. I deposited $500 bucks and started playing $5 Sit N Go’s until I was cashing consistently. The $500 turned into $1000 over a years time. I then had two major cashes of $1000 and $1600+ playing in large MTT’s taking down 2nd and 3rd place respectively and the rest is history.

Every now and then my wife has to show me that she is a lot smarter than I am. To this day I still have not touched another golf club nor do I have any desire to do so. On the other hand I didn’t realize that the best poker buddy I could ever have is married to me.

What a wonderful thing!

Implied Odds

Posted by Curtom | January 6, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, Strategy | Comments (0)

Implied odds, are calculated in the same manner as pot odds, but they take into account estimated future betting. Implied odds are calculated in situations where the player expects to fold in the following betting round if the draw is missed, thereby losing no additional bets, but expects to gain additional bets when the draw is made. Since the player expects to always gain additional bets in later rounds when the draw is made, and never lose any additional bets when the draw is missed, the extra bets that the player expects to gain, excluding his own, can fairly be added to the current size of the pot. This adjusted pot value is known as the implied pot.

Understanding this concept makes it easy to see why you want to play pots with players with a stack as large as your own later in poker tournaments. You obviously need to be able to fold when your beat but you want to put yourself in good situations when implied odds allow you to double your stack.

Understanding Pot Odds

Posted by Curtom | January 6, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, Strategy | Comments (0)

Pot odds are the ratio of the current size of the pot to the cost of a contemplated call. In other words, if the pot contains $100, and a player must call $10 to stay in the hand, then the player has 100-to-10, or 10-to-1. Pot odds are often compared to the probability of winning a hand with a future card in order to estimate the call’s expected value.

In order to effectively play the game of poker at a high level you must understand this concept and be able to apply it consistently. In other words, you need to understand when you are “priced in” to make the correct call.

PokerStars Final Table

Posted by Curtom | January 4, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, News | Comments (0)

Made a final table last night. I played the PokerStars 180 (Max Players) and ended up eighth. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to play a lot lately. I have been writing and working on new articles. I busted out when my AQ vs AK went up in flames. Not a bad cash though for only a few bucks on the buy-in.

Nothing really stood out about the tourney at all. I kinda coasted to the final table and picked up some big hands when I needed them. The biggest hand I made all night was two pair. That’s very unusual to play that long and be the best hand all night.

I will likely be at it again this evening some time with a better outcome I hope.

World Poker Tour Revolving Door

Posted by Curtom | January 2, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, Reviews | Comments (0)
I don’t know about you but the World Poker Tour is really getting under my skin lately. The poker is fine. It’s the revolving door with the hostess that is really burning me up! We are now in the 7th season and the show is already on it’s fourth hostess. Once Shana Hiatt left it was as if the producers lost there minds or something. Shana was not just beautiful but she had personality and was able to interact with the players in a believe able manner. I loved that her conversation with the players was genuine and engaging.

Since then there has been a plethora of young attractive and untalented host’s attempting to fill the shoes of Shana and they have all fallen woefully short. First, it was Courtney Friel. Courtney is a former news reporter with several years of experience. She is indeed attractive but when it came to poker she knew absolutely nothing at all. She also came off as being disinterested when she did her exit interviews with the players. You could tell she knew very little about the game because her questions were so simplistic and un-engaging. Second, there was Sabina Gadecki. Sabina is an aspiring actress that, while looking like a 12 year old in front of the camera’s, again knows nothing about the game of poker. Sabina did give it an honest effort and you could tell she really wanted to do well but it just did not project well on TV. Currently, Layla Kayleigh is the host of the WPT and this is yet another train wreck happening before our eyes. Again, a lack of knowledge of the game hurts any chances of her being believable. Layla is a model plain and simple. Nothing more and nothing less. She is attractive and that’s a far as it goes. Yet another failure by the WPT producers to really understand and appreciate what Shana Hiatt brought to the table.

I would recommend that the WPT producers go back and watch video of Shana Hiatt and seriously try to find someone within the poker world to do this job. I would highly recommend hiring Evelyn Ng for this task as she is both intelligent, projects well on TV and knows the game. If not her then Vanessa Rousso would be another good choice. There has to be an attractive, intelligent, knowledgeable player out there that can do TV work and project well. I hope the WPT starts to take the female host job seriously and puts someone in the position that is actually capable of doing the job and doing it well. Otherwise, the hostess position will continue to be a revolving door.

Play Free Poker!

Posted by Curtom | January 1, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, News, Reviews, Tournament | Comments (13)

Yes, you can play free poker! The National League of Poker has a great site that is a great place to play if your new to the game and not quite ready to put your money on the line yet. Just go to http://www.nlop.com/ and create an account. You will be asked to confirm your e-mail address and once completed you may login and begin to play. You will be given a “bankroll” of 2000 points per day to use in any way you like. You may choose cash games, tournaments or sit n go’s.

You earn additional points by referring others to the site as well as winning and “cashing” in tournaments. Prizes are awarded by various sponsors. Some of these prizes include buy-ins to the WSOP, NBA All-Star weekend trips, shirts, watches and I-Pods just to name a few. Cash prizes are awarded up to $500 dollars. There are nightly cash tournaments that pay up to $150.

Once you are logged in the site will attempt to install an active-x certificate. I have had no problems with this whatsoever. No spam or anything that I would consider bad in terms of the performance of my PC’s since installing it. Without the install you will be unable to sit at the tables and play. The only draw back is that you will have to see constant advertisements during your stay. A small price to pay considering there really is some surprisely stiff competition at some of the nightly cash tourneys for obvious reasons.

The National League of Online Poker is a great place for begginers to learn the game and gain valuable experience before depositing on real money sites.

How to Play Pocket Jacks (JJ)

Posted by Curtom | January 1, 2008 | Posted in: Articles, Strategy, Tournament | Comments (0)

Pocket Jacks are one of the most difficult hands to play in poker. You don’t want to over play the hand. However, you do want to be in position to pick up a nice pot. Here are a few ways I like to play pocket Jacks:

  1. Limp from early position early in a poker tournament with this hand. You can always call a raise as long as it is reasonable. The main thing you are attempting to do is hit the flop and hopefully slow play the hand for a big score.
  2. Raise from late position. This play has the usual advantages. A) You get weaker hands out of the pot. B) You may be able to take down the pot out right at that point.
  3. Be pre-pared to fold to a large re-raise when you have raised in position and are facing heat.
  4. Don’t over play the hand when the flop comes down [7][2][T] or something similar. Make your bet and see how your opponent reacts and proceed from there. Just because the flop looks favorable does not mean that you always have the best hand.

Pocket Jacks have always been and always will be a very tough hand to play. It takes discipline, as with any hand, but when you stick to good fundamental poker strategy you tend to put yourself a notch ahead of your opponents. JJ is not a bad hand but it can be played poorly. Take your time and make good decisions with it and you will do just fine.
