Poker Life of Curtom

Wow! The hustle is on folks. This month I have made 6 Final Tables out of 42 tournaments. Not bad at all sans the fact that I finished no higher than 5th in any of them. Nothing earth shattering has taken place lately. I am still playing well overall and for the most part have avoided the bad beats. The online tournaments are still have quite a bit of variance in them though. I am seeing pre-flop pushes with any pocket pair starting at level 1 so the games hyper-aggressive nature continues.

In order to counter this kind of foolishness I have been playing some Omaha Hi/Lo and Stud 8/OB. I enjoy both games and it slows the pace down considerably from my typical holdem tournaments. I spoke to friends on both the east and west coasts and they tell me the cash games have tightened up with the economy. The games still have plenty of players but the pots have become noticeably smaller. Very interesting stuff indeed. I still believe we have a shot at reversing the UIGEA in the senate. Plus, with the rulings in Kentucky and Colorado it certainly helps our case.

Do or Die Poker has hit the ground running this year and has done very well in January. Our readership is growing each month and the e-mails continue to pour in each day. The podcast will begin again starting next month. I have been so busy with the holidays and my wife’s birthday that I just did not have the time to squeeze in a couple. So, from here on out I will try and have at least 2 podcast per month as they have done extremely well for us and helps to get the word out.

Take care of yourselves and have a safe weekend.

Six final tables out of 42 tournaments is certainly impressive. Congrats! What level tournaments are you playing in? So far, I’ve played in micros two days in a row (place 5th the first day and 6th last night) but they are painfully slow (180 entrants – about 4 hours to get to the final table). I am wondering whether the time per tournament would increase or decrease if I moved up a level or two. Since I am brand new to online tournaments, I need all the practice I can get. However, I can see a future where it will no longer be fun to spend four hours or more to win just over $200 (assuming I come in first place occasionally).

Thanks Kevin. I am not playing any high level tournaments right now unless I am playing live. Just the regular micro $4 – $20 buy-in tournaments. Usually when I play the larger ones I have won a satellite. You can always try the 90 player Deep Stack SnG’s. That tourney is perfect for my tastes. I can get in and play and get out relatively quickly with the smaller field. The standard level time on Pokerstars in 15 minutes unless you are playing a Deep Stacks (Regular) tournament which the levels are 30 minutes each. I have bubbled the final table in the $10 Deep Stacks 2 times after playing for 10 hours. I got bad beat out both times unfortunately.

Sorry to hear about that guy pushing and then hitting a set of 4’s against your Aces pre-flop.

Brutal! Welcome to the world of low stakes poker.

Anyhow, keep up with the grind. You are off to one heck of a start!

That sounds like good success even if the placement is not as high as you would like. I do agree that the playing in tourneys is a bit wild forcing me to behave a little that one myself. Playing Omaha H/L is one way to bring back the sanity. And of course playing the better hands.

Thanks for chiming in Steve. Yes, the low stakes are like playing in the wild wild west.

    lol

Basically, I just let people give me their chips. I take pretty good notes as you know. The funny thing is that the same players continue to make the same mistakes over and over again. It makes my life at the table a whole lot easier.
