Balancing poker and life
Posted by Curtom | October 26, 2009 | Posted in: Articles, News | Comments (6)As much as I love the game of poker I have found that at times life can get a little out of balance. It’s great to be able to play and enjoy the game and writing about it is a bonus but sometimes you need to do things outside of the game. Lately, I have been working on renewing my love for other activities outside of poker. I am also working on taking care of myself better and getting more rest than I would normally. I know these may sound like very small things but they can have a major impact on your well being in both the long and short run.
The bottom line is that I have been working too hard and not stopping to smell the roses enough. I haven’t been playing as many live poker tournaments as I normally do because I have been working. Even my wife noticed that which tells me that I need to slow down. Having a passion for something in life is fantastic but when it consumes you to the point that you are no longer living it becomes a problem. So, while I am recalibrating my thinking just a little bit so that I can enjoy the things in life both in and outside of poker a little more. I wish the same for each and every on of my readers. Balance is good!

Thanks for this Curtom.
It’s always good to take a step back and look at where you are at and where you are going…
Good luck
No problem LAZ. Thank you!
Nice read. I agree-the balancing act is tough with anything you love.
Thanks for commenting Stef. It is tough but it can be done. When we do have balance we are better players as well as better human beings.
What Up Curtom, Hows Things
Was just dropping by to see how things are going, came across this post and starting remembering how much poker i used to play myself.
You are absolutely right, you cannot let your passion for the game take over your entire life. Too much poker is no good, especially for the health, changes your eating habits and just ruins the lower back.
You should begin exercising more and shit, start playing ball or something. The body will feel a whole lot better, and you will probably start playing better poker.
I was in your shoes at the start of this year, doing nothing but poker but then started balancing my lifestyle properly. It was probably the best move i made all year…
So yeh your making the right decision here and good luck to you in pulling it off.
Vik, thanks for chiming in my friend. Yes, I had to make a few adjustments like you said. I feel great and I am not burned out anymore after making some scheduling changes that are working out great.
